APWA members and staff extend their condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, staff, and constituents of U.S. Representative Sylvester Turner, who died this week due to health complications.
Turner, a former mayor of Houston, died just two months into his first term serving the 18th Congressional District. The Democrat was elected to replace long-serving Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, who died last July.
Turner was Houston’s mayor from 2016-2024. Prior to that he served in Texas’s State House for 27 years. During his time as mayor, he worked closely with APWA member and then-Houston Public Works Director Carol Haddock.
“He works to lift people up and help them thrive by delivering accessibility to resources and education,” Haddock said in a recent story by the Texas Retired Teachers Association, TRTA.
Rep. Turner, who joined APWA’s Big Cities Counties group during its visit to Houston in 2021, was 70.
