Committee News
Suzanne McCain, PE
Transportation Committee Chair
As the lifeblood of communities, transportation systems are essential to economic growth, mobility, and overall quality of life. The APWA Transportation Committee is dedicated to driving forward-thinking solutions to the challenges facing transportation professionals across the nation. Whether it’s addressing aging infrastructure, leveraging new technologies, or prioritizing sustainability, the committee is at the forefront of these critical discussions.

I’d like to extend an invitation to those of you who are a champion of or passionate about the area of sustainable transportation to join the Sustainable Transportation Subcommittee. This subcommittee gathers information on the best practices in sustainable transportation and encourages their use by working with the Transportation Committee on educational deliverables like toolboxes, APWA Reporter articles, and presentations at APWA conferences. The subcommittee meets quarterly and is a friendly, enthusiastic group with a passion for sustainable public works infrastructure and transportation services with consideration of social, economic, and environmental costs. Those interested in joining the subcommittee, or any of the other three subcommittees (Federal Transportation, Road Safety, Winter Maintenance), can email the Transportation Committee at TC@apwa.org.

119th U.S. Congress Public Policy Priorities: Transportation
APWA’s Transportation policy priority continues to work on infrastructure resilience, safety, and streamlining. It also zeros in on the infrastructure law:
- “We must work together to build upon IIJA’s opportunities to continue our momentum of retrofitting, operating, maintaining, and rebuilding all facets of our transportation infrastructure”
- APWA strongly encourages the greatest possible flexibility and accommodation to local entities and in support of safety projects, including continuing to streamline permitting, reporting and other project requirements.
Pothole Fact Sheet
The Pothole Fact Sheet includes information on what causes a pothole, what affects pavement life, how potholes are repaired and how we can stop potholes from forming.
Traffic Calming Toolbox
Reducing the negative effects of motor vehicle use is a broad topic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in 2020, speeding and aggressive driving were contributing factors in 29 percent of all traffic fatalities. It is not surprising then that most public works professionals use measures to increase road safety and reduce vehicle speed. This toolbox is an introduction for those just starting out in traffic calming and a handy reference guide for the experienced professional to the many tools available.
Partners and Collaborations
APWA and the National Local Technical Assistance Program Association (NLTAPA) have a formal partnership for the purpose of fostering a safe, efficient, and environmentally sound transportation system. Together, our goal is to improve the skills and knowledge of local transportation providers through training, technical assistance, and technology transfer.
APWA is a proud member of the Engineering Workforce Consortium, which was formed to drive recruitment, retention, and address the next generation of talent in engineering and public works. Representatives from APWA, the Engineering Workforce Consortium (EWC), and the Connecticut Transportation Institute participated in an American Counsel of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Podcast on collaborative efforts that are reshaping engineering education to meet the real-world demands of infrastructure development.
