The City of Bellevue has been at the forefront of the international movement to build Smart Cities that leverage advances in technology to improve livability, sustainability, and resiliency. In 2014, at the Council’s request, Bellevue formed an inter-departmental Smart Cities core team and began the process of creating a compelling vision and roadmap for bringing smart technologies to the city. In 2017, Bellevue published the Bellevue Smart plan, which included strategies and tactics as well as investments to advance its smart city vision across six elements: connectivity, transportation, public safety, water, energy, and buildings. This session will provide an overview of Bellevue’s Smart City vision and plan. We’ll cover the overarching principles for advancing smart city technologies including (1) moving from reactive to proactive; (2) driving with data; (3) leveraging partnerships; (4) working regionally.

Learning Objectives: 1. Define a process for developing a smart city plan that cuts across various lines of business and provides a long-term vision for integrating smart city technologies to realize improvements in livability, sustainability, and resiliency.

2. Establish a framework for developing and using a smart city maturity assessment tool, such as the capability maturity model that was used by the University of Washington.

3. Provide multiple examples of how smart city technologies across public works can be used to realize financial savings, reduce waste, improve services to customers, and ultimately improve resiliency.
