Learn about the intricacies of developing a Utilities Strategic Plan that covers four lines of business (water, wastewater, stormwater, solid waste) within a public works organizational framework. The objectives of the strategic plan were to develop a common vision and mission spanning across the four business areas, identify and define SMART goals for each distinct business area in a collaborative manner, improve staff teamwork and trust across all the business functions, graphically document the core services, and agree upon future opportunities and challenges.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the core elements of a strategic plan useful for any utility and/or public works organization.

2. Develop a strategy to create and implement a strategic plan with authentic input from staff ranging from engineers to field technicians.

3. Produce a strategic plan that will produce a line-of-sight for all employees between the day-to-day work tasks and high-level goals.
