Many agencies are looking for ways to reduce costs and improve efficiencies. Consolidating fleet maintenance activities is at the top of most municipalities' list. However, the requirements for the maintenance of emergency vehicles are more vigorous than those of the typical public works fleet.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) adopted a series of consensus standards that govern the building, maintenance and operation of emergency vehicles. At least 20 states have adopted these standards as law and in other states, tort liability cases look to these standards as proof of prudence.

- NFPA 1911: Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus (this determines how, when, and who can work on the vehicles)
- NFPA 1071: Standard for Emergency Vehicle Technician Professional Qualifications ( this ensures technicians have the proper skill sets)
- NFPA 1901: Standard For Automotive Fire Apparatus ( this directs how the vehicle is designed and built)
